Rouault signed this color lithograph in pencil and numbered it 12 of 100, so it is one impression from a limited edition rather than a unique work. Published in Paris around 1928, the self-portrait shows the thick black contours and saturated color that defined his mature style. Rouault first apprenticed with a stained-glass restorer before studying under Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts, and that early training is visible in the leaded, jewel-like outlines of his figures. He gives his own face the same somber, monumental treatment he applied to the religious and urban subjects of his paintings.
