Issued as a photomechanical print around 1944, this portrait of Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) carries a copyright notice from Master Prints Publishing Company of New York City and is credited to R.A. Loederer. Franklin was a printer, scientist and diplomat who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and he served as American minister to France during the Revolution. Mass-produced portraits like this one show how steadily Americans in the mid-twentieth century kept the founders in view. Although the gallery groups him with presidents, Franklin never held that office.
