Few portraits of Benjamin Franklin show him as plainly as this one, in a fur cap and heavy fur collar instead of the wig and formal dress of a court. The image goes back to a drawing by Charles Nicolas Cochin made in 1777, when Franklin was serving as American envoy in Paris and his face was already widely known in Europe. George E. Perine of New York engraved this version for the Eclectic, a periodical that published portraits of notable figures. The fur garments, listed here as a subject, are the detail that makes this likeness recognizable among many engraved Franklins.
