Titled "The Politician," this engraving shows Benjamin Franklin absorbed in his reading, a quieter portrait than the diplomat or inventor images that often accompany his name. The record credits a painting by S. Elmer and an engraving by T. Ryder, and the plate was first issued in London. It was republished in 1824 by Z. Sweet, a sign that Franklin's likeness still held interest a generation after his death in 1790. Franklin, a printer and writer who later served as a colonial agent and diplomat in London, was a figure whose transatlantic career made London printmakers eager to reproduce him.
