Here Benjamin Franklin appears among the delegates at the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where at 81 he was the oldest member. The scene is conjectural, so the artist imagined the gathering rather than drawing it from life. The engraving carries the names Lossing and Barritt, linked to Benson Lossing's illustrated histories of the American Revolution published in the mid-19th century, and it shows how later Americans pictured the founders at work.
