Franklin's first audience with King Louis XVI at Versailles took place on March 20, 1778, a few weeks after France had signed its alliance with the young United States. The meeting marked the first formal French reception of an American envoy and signaled that the king now treated the American cause as a serious partner. This chromolithograph, made around 1903, revisits that moment in bright color, when the scene of a republican diplomat before a European monarch was a popular subject for patriotic prints.
