Few moments in Franklin's public life were as hostile as the one this scene records, with him standing before the Lords of the Privy Council in Whitehall. In January 1774 he was called to answer a petition against Massachusetts Governor Thomas Hutchinson, after letters Hutchinson had written to London officials were leaked to the colonial press. Solicitor General Alexander Wedderburn turned the hearing into a personal attack, and Franklin stood silently through it. He was soon dismissed as deputy postmaster general for the colonies, a loss that marked his decisive turn toward the American cause.
