Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown here campaigning near his family estate at Hyde Park, New York, before a crowd that includes a group of motorcyclists, a detail that sets this picture apart from more formal portraits of the governor. The photograph dates to 1932, the year Roosevelt, then governor of New York, won the Democratic presidential nomination and went on to defeat Herbert Hoover in November. Hyde Park, his home town in the Hudson Valley, was where he spent much of his early political life, and the mix of local residents and visitors at such gatherings reflects the personal, face-to-face style of campaigning he relied on.
