Benjamin Franklin appears here in the moment he stood before the Privy Council in London in 1766, when Parliament was weighing the repeal of the Stamp Act. Franklin, then the colonial agent for Pennsylvania and other colonies, was questioned by the councillors about American opposition to the tax, and his calm, pointed answers helped turn the debate. The record dates the image to about 1946, so it is a later depiction of a scene from the 1760s rather than a contemporary view, and it reflects how Americans came to remember Franklin as a figure of colonial diplomacy.
