Theodore Roosevelt and the German Kaiser are the subjects that set this picture apart from the other Roosevelt portraits on this board. Roosevelt left the presidency in 1909 and traveled widely in Europe afterward, and his meetings with European rulers drew close press attention on both sides of the Atlantic. The image survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York news photo service whose pictures were sent quickly to newspapers. The title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative and has not been independently verified, so the identification of the two men should be read with that in mind.
