The title names Theodore Roosevelt and Kaiser Wilhelm II, though that label comes from unverified Bain News Service notes, and the negative is undated. The pairing reflects the two leaders' often cordial, sometimes strained contact. Roosevelt visited Berlin in 1910, months after leaving the presidency, and the emperor received him there. Earlier, Wilhelm's brother, Prince Henry of Prussia, had visited Washington in 1902 at Roosevelt's invitation. Bain's glass negatives were made for newspaper use in New York, so the picture offers a useful view of how the press presented the two men.
