Horses hauling a load, photographed at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 by Eadweard Muybridge, and published as one of the plates in his 1881 book on animal locomotion. Muybridge set up a row of cameras along a track so that each one tripped as the animal passed, producing a sequence of separate frames that showed the legs and body in motion, a method that let viewers see phases of movement the eye could not catch at normal speed. Pictures like this one helped answer a question people had argued about for decades, whether a trotting horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. The sequence is also an early step toward the moving pictures that appear on this board.
