This plate from Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* is labeled as horses in an irregular gait, and its subject index adds pulling, so it records a horse at work rather than at a simple run. Muybridge made the series at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras triggered by tripwires to split motion into fractions of a second. Such sequences answered long-standing questions about how animals move and helped pave the way for the moving pictures this board covers.
