Unlike the gallop studies that made Muybridge famous, this plate shows horses in the act of pulling, one of the many movements in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where it appears as plate number 6. The sequences were made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras that fired as the animals passed tripwires, a method developed in part to answer whether a trotting or galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. Muybridge later shared the work with Leland Stanford, who had financed the project and whose Palo Alto stock farm supplied the horses. Viewed today, the print reads as an early step toward motion pictures, since its successive frames show a single action broken into moments.
