Two horses leaning into a load show the straining pull of hauling, one of the less familiar movements Eadweard Muybridge recorded at Palo Alto, California. Muybridge made these sequences in 1878 and 1879 on the property of Leland Stanford, using a row of cameras that tripped as the animals passed, to break motion into separate frames. The plates were gathered into *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, which Muybridge copyrighted in 1881, and this print is one of its illustrations. The series was meant to show what the eye could not, the exact position of a body at each instant of its effort.
