Muybridge's "Horses. Hauling" shows horses pulling a load, one of the studies he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879 on Leland Stanford's horse-breeding farm. It was published as an illustration in his 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, where the photographs were arranged to show the sequence of an animal's positions while moving. Muybridge used a row of cameras tripped by wires along the track, a method that caught movement too fast for the eye to follow. Pictures like this helped settle questions about gait that horsemen and artists had argued over for years.
