This view looks up the front stairway of the Thomas Jefferson Building, the granite and marble structure that opened in 1897 as the main home of the Library of Congress. The building was named for Thomas Jefferson, whose personal book collection, sold to Congress in 1815, helped form the library's foundation. The photograph was taken around 1933 by Theodor Horydczak, a Washington photographer who documented the city's buildings and streets over several decades. His record of the period shows how the Beaux-Arts monument looked to visitors in the years before the Great Depression's effects gave way to the New Deal.
