The Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, which opened in 1897 on Capitol Hill, was built to house the nation's book collection in a showpiece of Beaux-Arts design, and its interior bookstacks were among the most closely watched spaces in the building. This view, catalogued by the Library of Congress from a 1920s Underwood & Underwood photograph, shows the working area behind the public reading rooms, where iron shelving and the staff who moved volumes through it kept the collection in use. Underwood & Underwood was a large commercial studio of the period, known for press and stock views, so the picture reflects the way the institution wanted its library presented to a wide audience.
