Looking south down Main Street from Sixth Street, this view shows the commercial heart of Mason City, the county seat of Cerro Gordo County in north-central Iowa. The record dates the photograph only to the 191- range, so it was likely taken in the 1910s. Street scenes like this one capture brick storefronts, overhead wires, and the foot traffic of an early twentieth-century Midwestern town. Mason City is also the setting that inspired Meredith Willson's musical *The Music Man*, which gives its ordinary streets an extra layer of interest.
