This view looks along Sutter Street from the corner of Mason Street, and its subject is a synagogue, a building type that was still unusual in a city where most of the population had arrived during the Gold Rush. By the mid-1860s San Francisco had a sizable Jewish community with several congregations, and the street-level scene shows how a house of worship fit into the dense commercial and residential blocks of the time. The picture is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, which sold city and landscape views to viewers who used stereoscopes at home. The record's date and caption details come from an old card and have not been fully verified, so the exact year and the building's occupants are best checked against other sources.
