Few of the city's views from the 1860s show a house of worship on a street like Mason, which makes this stereograph a useful record of San Francisco's Jewish community in its early decades. The Gold Rush had drawn many Jewish merchants and families to the city, and by the mid-1860s they had built congregations with permanent synagogues. Published around 1866 as part of the *Gems of California Scenery* series, this view was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the building depth and made it feel close to the viewer. The Library holds only one card from the pair, so the second image is missing from this record, and the caption details are unverified.
