Russian Hill, seen from the corner of Mason and Sacramento streets, shows a San Francisco that was still taking shape in the mid-1860s, when the city's steep slopes were only partly built up. The view comes from a stereograph series sold under the title "Gems of California Scenery," and this record preserves only one half of the original pair, so the stereo effect is not available here. Such cards were popular parlor items, and their street views offer a useful look at how the hills were settled before the grid of houses was fully laid out.
