K Street in Sacramento, shown here with a Masonic hall and a Catholic church side by side, was the commercial spine of a town that grew fast after the 1848 gold discovery and became the state capital in 1854. Photographers recorded streets like this for travelers and parlor viewers, and this half of a stereographic pair, numbered 1064 in the Gems of California series, survives without its companion. The fraternal and religious buildings together show how quickly a mining supply town was building its civic life. Some caption details come from older records that have not been verified.
