Named for two fraternal orders, the Masonic and Odd Fellows Hall stood in San José, the town that served as California's first state capital from 1849 to 1851. This view is one half of a stereographic pair issued as *Gems of California Scenery*, no. 63, and only this half survives in the Library's holdings, so the second image that created the three-dimensional effect is missing. Freemasons and Odd Fellows lodges were widespread in California towns by the 1860s, and their halls often hosted meetings, social events and public gatherings. The 1866 date comes from an old caption card that the record itself flags as unverified.
