Tripler Hall in New York City hosted this December 27, 1850, gathering, which brought together Freemasons who had been under the jurisdiction of St. John's Grand Lodge with the Grand Lodge of the state of New York. The print was made from a daguerreotype by the Clark brothers, whose Broadway studio produced it, and it was deposited for copyright in July 1851. Its dual dating, A.D. 1850 alongside A.L. 1850, reflects the Masonic calendar, which counts years from the traditional creation of the world. The image is a useful record of how lodge members staged formal public ceremonies in the 1850s and how photographic images were turned into lithographs for wide circulation.
