Tripler Hall, a large public auditorium in New York City, is the setting here, and the title names the event as a great Masonic celebration of union. Such gatherings in mid-nineteenth-century New York typically marked the reconciliation of rival Masonic bodies that had split apart, and public ceremonies of this kind drew lodge members in regalia, dignitaries, and crowds of onlookers. Prints like this one were often issued to commemorate such occasions and to record the pageantry of fraternal life at a time when Freemasonry was among the largest voluntary associations in the country. Look closely at the arrangement of the crowd and the regalia to see how the organizers staged the event.
