Looking down K Street in Sacramento from the Masonic Hall, this albumen print records a central downtown thoroughfare in the young state capital during the 1860s. Sacramento had become California's capital in 1854, and K Street was one of its main commercial streets, where shops, offices, and the wagons and pedestrians that moved goods through the city would have crowded the roadway. The Library holds only one half of a stereographic pair, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series as number 1067, so the companion view is not part of this record. Masonic lodges were common civic anchors in nineteenth-century California towns, and the building's vantage point gives this view its particular interest.
