Rather than showing the battlefield, this poster asks New York girls to join the Girls' Division of the New York War Camp Community Service for rallies, parties and service with men in uniform. The War Camp Community Service was organized in 1917 to offer soldiers and sailors wholesome recreation near training camps, partly to steer them away from the saloons and street life that worried reformers and military leaders. Albert Herter, credited on the print, was a painter known for decorative and illustrative work, and the poster shows how civilian volunteers, especially young women, were drawn into the war effort on the home front.
