Be up-to-date" urges young men to trade the Marines' familiar campaign hat for a modern steel helmet, a pointed message in a period when the Corps was still known for its broad-brimmed headgear. The artist, W.A. Rogers, was a well-known illustrator and cartoonist, and the notation that the image was courtesy of the New York Herald points to its newspaper origins. Dated between 1914 and 1918, it appeared while the United States was entering and fighting in World War I, when the armed forces were expanding rapidly and recruiting material aimed to make service look current and practical. The helmet on the poster reflects the wartime shift toward protective gear in the trenches.
