Flagg's poster leads with its slogan, "First in the fight. Always faithful," which echoes the Marine Corps motto, Semper Fidelis, meaning "always faithful." Flagg, best known for his 1917 Uncle Sam "I Want You" poster, was one of the most recognized illustrators of his era. The record gives the date only as 1922 with a question mark, so the exact year is uncertain. The Marines' reputation from the fighting in France in 1918 gave recruiters a strong story to tell.
