The address "1414 Girard" places this view on Girard Street in northwest Washington, though the title is taken from a note on the negative and has not been independently verified. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the capital's streets, buildings and residents from the early 1900s into the 1930s. Glass plates like this 8 by 6 inch negative were the standard medium of the period, and the streaks and blemishes that may appear on its surface come from deterioration in the original coatings, not from the photographer's choices.
