The record ties this view to a single address, 1410 Girard, though the title comes from unverified data on the negative or its sleeve. The National Photo Company worked across Washington in the early twentieth century, recording houses, storefronts and street scenes in a growing capital. This 8 by 6 inch glass negative is dated by comparison with others in its range to about 1920 to 1921, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is part of what makes these plates fragile records of their time.
