The title, *Fourth little bear*, suggests this stereograph belongs to a sequence of young bears, and its subject line ties the animals to Theodore Roosevelt. The card dates to about 1905, during his presidency, and was made as a stereo view: two nearly identical photographs meant to be seen through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Roosevelt's 1902 Mississippi hunt, in which he declined to shoot a tied-up bear, became a national story and helped inspire the teddy bear craze. The card's copyright was registered in the name of Alexander Lambert.
