The title places President Theodore Roosevelt at the moment of firing on one of the large bears in a tree, a scene that suggests the hunt was staged or at least arranged for the camera, as many outdoor pictures of the era were. Roosevelt was an avid big-game hunter, and his hunting trips, especially a 1902 bear hunt in Mississippi, drew wide press coverage that helped shape his image as a rugged outdoorsman. Photographs like this one, made around 1905, show how the public was invited to see the presidency through the lens of the sporting life. Today the picture also prompts questions about the era's attitudes toward wildlife and conservation, a subject Roosevelt himself would later champion through national parks and forest reserves.
