Kermit Roosevelt, the second son of Theodore Roosevelt, sits beneath a tree with his dog Jack, a pairing that puts the family's boyhood at the White House era in a quieter, more informal light. Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of her day, made many portraits of the Roosevelt household, and her studio work often favored natural settings over stiff formal poses. The caption card's note on dogs reflects how central pets were to the Roosevelt children, who kept a wide menagerie. Kermit was a young man when the picture was taken, and he later became a explorer and writer.
