Kermit Roosevelt, the second son of Theodore Roosevelt, is shown here with Jack, the family's dog, a pairing that captures the informal side of the Roosevelt household during the early 1900s. The photograph was made by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of her era, who was known for her candid and carefully composed portraits of public figures and their families. Kermit was a young boy at the White House when his father was president, and the dog Jack, a terrier, appeared in a number of family pictures. The image is worth noticing for its relaxed mood, which contrasts with the formal state portraits more often made of the presidential family.
