Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was a famous figure of the early 1900s, and this portrait shows her in riding clothes with a dog at her side. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, was one of the leading American portrait photographers of her era and made many studies of the Roosevelt family during the years they lived in the White House. Dated around June 1902, the picture captures Alice in the middle of her public life as a young woman in Washington, when her lively, independent manner drew wide newspaper attention. The print is part of Johnston's collection at the Library of Congress.
