Alice Roosevelt, the eldest daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, appears here as a young woman in a photograph dated around 1905, the year she turned 21 and was at the center of Washington society while her father occupied the White House. Her public image was closely watched in those years, and she became one of the most photographed women in the country, known for her wit and her defiant style. The Library of Congress record notes that the caption information comes from an old card that has since been revised, so the exact date and occasion are not fully settled. A copy negative in the same collection appears to come from the same sitting, which suggests the image circulated in more than one print.
