Here Roosevelt is shown on horseback with a lasso, herding steers whose flanks bear the names of states. The record gives a cataloger's title and notes that the drawing probably ran in the Washington Post, so it is best read as a commentary cartoon rather than a documented news picture. Roosevelt's years ranching in the Dakota Badlands in the 1880s made the cowboy a natural image for him, and in 1904, the year he won election to a full term, cartoonists often played on that reputation.
