Printed across the top is the claim that Sapho was New York's "raging sensation," a boast that fit a play built on scandal. The production was adapted from the French, drawing on Alphonse Daudet's 1884 novel about a Parisian artist's model and her affair with a younger man. Its frank treatment of a courtesan's life drew complaints from authorities in New York, which only added to its notoriety. The Gillin Print Co., which kept offices in New York and Philadelphia, produced this color lithograph, and its bold lettering shows how theater posters of the period sold controversy as much as drama.
