Named for Admiral George Dewey, whose victory at Manila Bay in 1898 made him a national hero, the Hotel Dewey was one of several large hotels built in Washington around the turn of the twentieth century. Its name alone reflects the patriotic enthusiasm of the Spanish-American War years, when the city's hotels filled with visiting officials, veterans and out-of-town guests. Architectural images like this one help show how Washington's commercial streetscape changed as the capital grew into a national hub for travel and government business.
