The horses in this picture are drawn in front of a hearse, and the caption ties the scene to Lincoln's funeral, the procession that carried the assassinated president's body through the North in April and May 1865. Lincoln was shot at Ford's theater in Washington on April 14, 1865, and died the next morning. His body lay in state in the Capitol and was then taken by train on a long route through cities including Baltimore, Harrisburg, New York and Chicago, before burial in Springfield, Illinois. Funeral processions like this one drew huge crowds, and images of them were widely circulated as a way for ordinary people to mark the loss.
