The most distinctive detail here is the wagon itself, drawn by six white horses in a formal procession. Funeral cars like this one carried Abraham Lincoln's body through cities across the North in April and May 1865, after his assassination, on the long journey back to Springfield, Illinois. Such processions drew crowds that lined the streets, and photographers often recorded them for sale. This albumen print on a carte de visite mount reflects the popular small-format portrait and view cards of the period, which allowed mourners to keep a memento of the national grief.
