New York held one of the largest public funerals for Abraham Lincoln on April 25, 1865, ten days after he died in Washington. His body had lay in state at City Hall before the procession moved up Broadway, with the city draped in mourning. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., a New York firm known for photographic views and stereographs, the picture records a moment when the city turned out in grief. Such prints sold widely, carrying the scene to people far from New York.
