The funeral car that carried Abraham Lincoln through New York in the spring of 1865 is the subject here, shown in a hand-colored view of the procession. Lincoln's body had lain in state at City Hall before the cortege moved toward the rail line bound for Springfield, Illinois. This picture dates from about 1879, roughly fourteen years after the event, so it is a later rendering of a memorable moment rather than an on-the-spot record. The added color and the credit to P. Relyea are worth noting, since they show how the public continued to revisit the national mourning long after the funeral.
