The title fixes this print to April 25, 1865, the day Lincoln's funeral procession moved through New York City, several days after he was shot and a few days before his body was returned to Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln's body had lain in state in the city, and the crowds and processions that followed drew strong public mourning. Charles Magnus was a New York publisher of colored lithographs, and prints like this one were sold to a public that wanted a lasting memento of the national grief.
