Lincoln's visit to Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters at City Point, Virginia, in March 1865 was one of his last trips to the front before his assassination in April. City Point sat on the James River and served as the Union's main supply base for the siege of Petersburg, so the place was crowded with ships, railroad lines, and army camps. Lincoln spent several weeks there meeting with Grant and other officers as the war neared its end, and the photographs taken during that stay, including this one, are among the best records of the president in the field.
