Alexander Gardner made this wet collodion glass negative at Antietam on October 3, 1862, less than a month after the battle, and it shows Abraham Lincoln in conversation with Allan Pinkerton and Maj. Gen. John A. McClernand. Lincoln had traveled to the battlefield to meet McCellan's army and assess its condition, and the detective Pinkerton, who ran intelligence for the Union, was a familiar figure in his circle. The title's "Another View" signals that Gardner photographed the same scene from more than one angle, a common practice when a subject was worth documenting carefully. Wet collodion plates demanded that the photographer coat, expose and develop the glass while it was still wet, so such field work required a portable darkroom and considerable skill.
