This wet collodion glass negative records a funeral for Abraham Lincoln, made by the photographer D. B. Woodbury, and the process itself is part of its story. Collodion plates had to be coated, exposed, and developed while still wet, so a photographer working at a funeral had to prepare each plate just before taking the picture. Lincoln died in April 1865, and his body was carried by rail through many Northern cities on the way to Springfield, Illinois, where he was buried in May. The record does not say where this scene was made, but the mourning displays and crowds of that period were photographed widely.
