Wellesley College, the women's college founded in 1870 in Wellesley, Massachusetts, is the setting for this view of a barn, made around 1908. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the United States and sold views of towns, campuses and rural scenes, recorded it on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, a large format that captured fine detail. Images like this show that a campus now associated mainly with classrooms and dormitories once included fields and agricultural outbuildings. The negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and is now held by the Library of Congress.
